Eat in La Maison 1888, Danang (Vietnam)

La Maison 1888 is opened by the world renowned Chef Michel Roux. It is located at the InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort, at the beautiful Son Tra Peninsula.

The resort itself was by far the most memorable experience I had in Danang. We arrived there before 7 pm which was already dark. But the place was so tranquil and serene. You can feel the staff were very sincere and welcoming. From the lobby, a staff escorted us to the restaurant which we need to take a wooden lift to get there. As we went down slowly, the view from the peninsula to the sea was magnificent, so surreal. I can only recall it in my memory as it was too dark to take a nice picture.

Anyway, let’s get to the point. We ordered the set menu which comes in 7 courses. First, we were served the amuse-bouche. It is a refreshing cold cucumber juice (if I remember it correctly) with 2 types of canapés. I also had a fresh apple juice.

Followed by a Potato Croquette with vegetable puree.

1. The first entree is, Pan-Fried Scallop and Baby Octopus, with Celery Puree and Tamarind Sauce. For me, the tamarind sauce didn't go quite well with the scallop and the octopus, maybe it's just my personal preference. But overall, it's still a good dish.

2. Next entree is Pan-Fried Foie Gras with a slice of Caramelised Watermelon and Orange Dressing. This is my favourite dish. The foie gras was super juicy and tender. The caramelised watermelon was a perfect match too.

3. Before moving on to the plat principal or the main course, we were served Sugarcane Sorbet with a hint of Dark Rum. It was refreshing, sweet but not too sweet with a light aroma of dark rum.

4. The moment that I'd been waiting for, the main course! For myself, I ordered Grilled Rabbit Fillet with Celeriac Fondant, Glazed Chestnuts and Armagnac Sauce. I was so excited to see the presentation of this dish, especially with the rabbit-shaped toast. The rabbit fillet was a very lean meat, a little tough though. I did enjoy this dish as a whole.

As for my husband, he was having the Pork Iberica, Terrine of Kohlrabi, Sweet Corn Puree and Poivrade Sauce. The pork was very lean yet tender.

5. Then we had Trio of Matured Cheeses with a Rambutan.

6. Moving on is the dessert which was excellent (I mean really, the pastry is exceptional). It was Millefeuille with Vanilla and Caramel Cream, served with Passionfruit Sorbet.

7. Lastly, it is the Petits Fours with Coffee. The caneles,  madeleines, financiers were exceptionally good. Also we had macarons, meringue and marshmallow which were fantastic.

Overall, the food was great. The service is decent and formal, a typical classical French fine dining I guess. The dinner for 2 costs VND 7.8 million (MYR 1,150 or USD 363).
